Management Team

The Ener1 management team includes luminaries from the automotive and financial industries, as well as the scientific research community. Each individual brings with him the knowledge and experience necessary to make Ener1 a continuing success.

Charles Gassenheimer – Chairman/CEO

Charles Gassenheimer

Charles Gassenheimer is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ener1, Inc. He is also Chief Executive Officer of Ener1 Group, the largest shareholder of Ener1, Inc.

Over his career, Charles has forged a reputation as a dynamic businessman, with a proven track record in structuring and managing complex capital markets transactions, as well as in transforming failing companies into highly competitive businesses.

Before joining Ener1, Charles was Managing Director and Portfolio Manager of both the Convertible Arbitrage Division and Private Investment Group of Satellite Asset Management, a hedge fund with approximately $6 billion in assets. Prior to that, he was Portfolio Manager and head of the distressed securities investment group of Tribeca Investments, the hedge fund division of Citigroup Global Investments. Charles has also served as a Vice President at Credit Suisse First Boston.

Charles began his career with Coopers & Lybrand in the field of operational and financial turn-around management services. He graduated with a degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Ulrik Grape - Executive Vice President

Ulrik Grape

As Executive Vice President of Ener1, Inc. and CEO of EnerDel, Ulrik Grape brings more than 18 years of experience in senior management, business development, manufacturing and finance to the firm. Ulrik is one of the eminent voices within the lithium-ion industry, having previously spent ten years at Danionics A/S, an international lithium-ion battery company headquartered in Denmark. In his role as Sales and Marketing Director and Vice President U.S., he successfully secured major contracts for lithium-ion polymer rechargeable batteries, while developing strong customer relationships with leading United States portable electronic product manufacturers.

Prior to his experience with lithium-ion batteries, Ulrik held senior executive positions in the airline, construction equipment and other global industries. These included acting as Managing Director for Volund A/S, a privately held Danish industrial group, and as an Associate at Trap & Kornum A/S, a mergers and acquisition firm operating in the Scandinavian market.

Ulrik earned a Bachelor's degree in International Politics and Affairs from Georgetown University and a Masters of Business Administration from the French business school INSEAD.

Naoki Ota - Chief Operating Officer

Naoki Ota

Naoki Ota is Chief Operating Officer of Ener1, Inc. and President and Chief Operating Officer of EnerDel. With more than 15 years of management, technical, operations and marketing experience in lithium-ion battery production and related industries, Naoki brings with him a wealth of expertise to the company.

Most recently, Naoki was Senior Manager of Technology Marketing for Hitachi Chemical Research Center, Inc. Before that, he spent 8 years gaining in-depth lithium-ion business experience at Quallion, LLC, a manufacturer of batteries for medical implants and aerospace applications. At Quallion, Mr. Ota held senior management positions in Advanced Material Resources, Application Engineering and Marketing and Strategic Planning. He has also worked as a consultant for sourcing advanced materials for lithium-ion batteries and other electrochemical devices. Naoki holds a Bachelor’s of Applied Chemistry degree from Osaka Prefacture University in Japan.

Cyrus Ashtiani - Chief Technology Officer, EnerDel

Cyrus Ashtiani

Cyrus Ashtiani has 24 years of leading technical and managerial experience in the aerospace, power generation and distribution, and automotive industries.

For the last 14 years he has been involved in the development of electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles at Chrysler, with a focus on advanced lithium-ion batteries and systems. He held positions as a senior technical specialist, manager of USABC programs, and most recently Chairman of The USABC Technical Committee.

In January 2009, Cyrus joined EnerDel as Chief Technology Officer, and will lead the company’s rapidly growing advanced lithium-ion battery research and technology development activities, facilitate transition of the technology into production, and help support various technical functions within the organization.

Cyrus received Masters and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from McGill University in 1981 and 1984, respectively.

Peter Novak – President/Chief Technology Officer, Ener1

Peter Novak

Dr. Peter Novak is the President, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of Ener1, Inc. Peter graduated from the Ural Polytechnic Institute, Physics and Technical Department, with a specialization in experimental nuclear physics. Subsequently he obtained his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the Institute of Solid State Chemistry's Ural Branch Academy of Science in Russia. As a world-renowned expert in lithium-ion battery technology, he has written many scientific articles and patent applications and brings broad interdisciplinary experience in transforming advanced research projects into business solutions.

Gerard Herlihy – Chief Financial Officer

Gerard Herlihy

Gerard Herlihy is Chief Financial Officer of Ener1, Inc. He has more than 30 years’ worth of financial and management experience in a variety of businesses. Prior to joining the Ener1 management team, Jerry served as President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Splinex Technology Inc., a majority owned subsidiary of Ener1 Group. His previous experience includes serving as Chief Financial and Administrative Officer of Williams Controls Inc., as well as President and Chief Operating Officer of CliniCorp, Inc. Before that, he worked at Thomson McKinnon Securities as an investment banker, and began his career as a CPA with Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co in New York City. Gerard received his Masters of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
